Noah Balta from the Richmond Football Club has addressed the public for the first time following his recent sentencing on an assault charge. In his statement, Balta expressed deep regret and extended his gratitude to his support system, including his family and the club.
On Tuesday, Balta received a $3,000 fine and was given an 18-month community corrections order after he admitted to assaulting a man in Mulwala on December 30. The court also imposed a curfew from 10 PM to 6 AM at his Melbourne residence, which will be in effect until July 22, 2025. This curfew will prevent him from participating in several of the Tigers' upcoming night and interstate games.
In a video posted on the Richmond website, Balta took the opportunity to publicly apologize.
"I want to take this moment to apologize to the victim and his family," Balta stated.
"Additionally, I am truly sorry for the pain I have caused my own family, friends, and the entire Richmond Football Club community and the Tiger army."
Balta acknowledged that his actions were misguided, especially under the influence of alcohol. He emphasized that violence is never an acceptable response and described his decision as a poor one.
He shared his commitment to personal improvement, noting that he has abstained from drinking for the past three months and plans to continue this for the next 18 months. His goal is to better himself off the field and support his overall well-being.
Balta also expressed his appreciation for the unwavering support from his family, friends, and the club.
Earlier on Wednesday, Richmond's coach, Adem Yze, commented on Balta's situation, stating that Balta would speak when he felt ready. Yze mentioned that the day of the sentencing was particularly challenging for Balta, involving a long trip to Albury and back.
